Newgate FAQs

What Types of Vehicles Can Be Donated?

Newgate School accepts almost all cars, trucks, SUVs, and motorcycles. Newer models are especially useful as training tools. Other types of vehicles (such as boats or RVs) may be accepted depending on age and condition, but they must be drivable and cannot be used for training as the school is not set up to repair these types of vehicles.

Can I Donate My Car if it Doesn’t Run?

Yes, Newgate School will tow vehicles that can be used in our training programs. In some limited circumstances towing may not be available if the cost of transport exceeds the potential revenue value of the car. However, we accept any vehicle regardless of condition if you’re able to get it to the school.

Do You Pick Up the Vehicle?

Yes, Newgate School will tow vehicles that aren’t running and can be used in our training programs. In some limited circumstances towing may not be available if the cost of transport exceeds the potential revenue value of the car. However, we accept any vehicle regardless of condition if you’re able to get it to the school.

How Long Will It Take For Newgate to Pick Up My Vehicle?

In general, Newgate School will tow your vehicle within 24-48 hours of a completed donation.

How Do I Schedule a Pick-Up?

If you plan to come to the school with your paperwork, our intake staff will schedule a tow at the same time. Generally, we can pick up your vehicle the next day or within 48 hours during our busy seasons. If you plan to donate through our online process, a representative from the school will contact you within 24 hours to schedule a tow.

Are Vehicle Donations Tax Deductible?

Yes! Vehicle donations are tax deductible. Newgate will provide you with the IRS receipt Form 1098-C within 30 days of the completed donation or date of sale as required by law. The form will provide you with the information needed for any tax deduction you plan to take. We always recommend that you consult with your tax expert prior to submitting your taxes.

How Do You Determine the Value of My Donated Vehicle?

The value of donated vehicles is determined based on the IRS requirements for vehicle donations.

If the vehicle is used in our training programs or given away as part of our Wheels for Women program, you can deduct the fair market value of the vehicle. Fair market value is determined by the donor, and we recommend that you consult with your tax consultant prior to submitting your taxes.

If the vehicle is sold as-is, we will provide you with the sale price when we send you the required tax receipt after the sale. If the vehicle sells for under $500, you can claim the fair market value up to $500.00. If the gross proceeds from the sale of your donated vehicle exceed $500.00, you can deduct the actual sale price.

What documents do I need to donate my car?

In general, you will need the title for the vehicle. In cases where there is a lender listed on the title, you will also need the lien release from that vendor, regardless of how long the vehicle has been paid off. The owner will sign the title only on the seller’s signature line. No other information should be placed on the title, as Newgate will process the paperwork once it’s received. If you have unusual circumstances, such as the death of the owner, power of attorney, or estate sales, please contact Newgate, and we will provide information on additional documentation that will be needed.

How Much of the Vehicle Profits Goes to Newgate School?

What sets us apart from other organizations that accept vehicle donations is that 100% of the sale proceeds from your donation go to the School to support the tuition-free training provided to underserved young adults in our community. Plus, so many of the vehicles donated are repaired and refurbished and continue to provide transportation for others in the community. If eligible, vehicles may also be used in our Wheels for Women program that provides repaired cars for free to single working Moms without reliable transportation.

When Does My Liability for the Donated Vehicle End?

Newgate’s insurance covers the vehicle once all of the transfer paperwork is completed and signed. You can cancel your insurance as of the day of donation.
